A Dual Action Polisher or DA Polisher simply means that the machine uses an elliptical orbit whilst in use to help reduce the chances of ‘burning through’ the paint.
Whilst the pad on the machine is spinning in one direction (similar to that of a rotary machine) the axil that holds the backing plate is moving in an oscillated direction, this is known in the industry as ‘throwing’ and this movement, along with the dedicated holes on the backing plate is what causes the heat dispersion and greatly reduces the chances of burning through the clearcoat on the car’s paint. -
As mentioned above, the main physical difference between the DA and Rotary Polishers is that the Dual Action Polisher uses an elliptical orbit to help with heat dispersion.
Rotary polishers work amazingly fast and due to their higher RPM, this usually results in Rotary Polishers having a higher and more powerful cutting ability than a DA polisher. However, running a polisher at a higher speed comes at a much higher risk (burning through clearcoat and pads) and usually leaves swirl marks, or marring that will need to be removed using a finishing pad and finishing compound. We recommend users to have some prior knowledge and experience when looking to purchase a Rotary Polisher as Dual Action Polishers are extremely forgiving and better suited towards amateurs and enthusiasts.
For professionals it is recommended to have access to both a Dual Action and Rotary machine to ensure you have the best of both worlds when it comes to leaving that ‘show room’ shine for your customers! -
The choice between a 3", 5", or 6" Dual Action (DA) Polisher depends on your specific needs and the tasks you plan to perform. Here's a breakdown of each size and the pro’s and cons between each model:
3” Dual Action Polisher:
Use Case: Ideal for small or intricate areas such as badges, mirrors, handles and other tight curves and intricacies that may be found on a cars exterior.
Pros: Great control in small areas, lighter, easier to handle.
Cons: Not suitable for large surfaces, takes longer to cover larger areas.
5” Dual Action Polisher:
Use Case: A good all-rounder for general polishing tasks on cars. It offers a balance between coverage and control.
Pros: Versatile, can handle both small and large areas reasonably well. Most common and popular size of polisher.
Cons: May not reach very tight spots as well as a 3” polisher.
6” Dual Action Polisher:
Use Case: Best for large, flat surfaces such as car hoods, roofs and doors.
Pros: Covers large areas quickly, efficient for bigger jobs.
Cons: Far less manoeuvrable in tight spaces, heavier and might be harder to control for precise work than a 5” or 3” polisher.
If your budget allows, having both a smaller (3") and a medium/large (5" or 6") polisher can provide the most flexibility for various detailing tasks.
